Which Baby Feeding Bottles Should I Buy?
Once you have decided that you are going to bottle feed your baby, the next big decision needs to be made, “Which baby feeding bottles should I buy?”
As with anything nowadays there is a large choice of different baby feeding bottles available in all different shapes and sizes and varying from cheap to very expensive. To start with you’ll need at least half a dozen bottles together with sterilizing solution and cleaning equipment. Are the expensive bottles worth the cost? Or should you just buy a standard baby bottle without all the bells and whistles?
There are two main types of baby feeding bottles, plastic or glass. Glass bottles are durable, unless you drop them, and probably more hygienic. They are easy to wash and do not have a lingering smell after they have been used. They are also completely free of any chemicals. The disadvantages of glass is that they are a lot heavier and cost a lot more.
Plastic bottles are cheaper so you can afford to replace them as needed. There has been some concern over the chemical content of plastic bottles. Bisphenol A (BPA) used in the manufacture of some plastic bottles and is thought to cause behavioral changes in babies and contribute to early onset of puberty in girls. This is not proven and is still being investigated.
According to the FDA, there is no health risk from using plastic feeding bottles. If you trust the FDA then by all means go ahead with plastic bottles.
There are also specialized baby feeding bottles on the market. Some of these are designed to prevent colic by limiting the amount of air that baby swallows. Other bottles have disposable liners which eliminate the need for sterilization. Of course the cost of these specialized types of bottles is considerably higher, but if you have a baby with colic of no time to sterilize bottles then these may be an option for you.
In conclusion the best choice for you would be what your baby prefers and which bottle seems to work best for your situation. Bottle feeding your baby is great alternative to breast feeding if the latter is not possible for some reason and can be a rewarding experience. Your choice of baby feeding bottles will add to this positive feeding experience.
